Escritor y naturalista francoestadounidense. Viajó al Nuevo Mundo en 1755 como funcionario y cartógrafo. Se hizo granjero y más tarde fue cónsul de Francia durante un largo período. Regresó a Europa en 1790. Debe su fama a Letters from an American Farmer [Cartas de un granjero estadounidense] (1782, 1784, 1790), 12 ensayos en los que ofrece un completo panorama de la vida en EE.UU. Su Voyage dans la Haute Pensylvanie et dans l'Etat de New York [Viajes por la alta Pensilvania y el estado de Nueva York] apareció en 1801. En 1925 revivió el interés por Crèvecoeur al publicarse una serie de ensayos inéditos con el título de Sketches of Eighteenth Century America [Bocetos de los Estados Unidos del siglo XVIII]. En su época fue el más leído de los observadores de la realidad estadounidense.
